Biography

James Clayton was born about 1819 in North Carolina.[1] He married Martha Elliott on 9 Dec 1858 in Stanly County, North Carolina.[2]

In 1880, James, age 61, was a farmer living in Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina, with wife Martha (45), and four children:[1]

  1. Charlie (age 20)
  2. Gilliam (age 18)
  3. Nancy A (age 15)
  4. Brantley (age 13)

James, son of Joseph Claton and Margaret Claton, was 62 years old when he married Martha Pickler, 42 year old daughter of Joseph Pickler and Jane Pickler, on 4 Feb 1883 at the home of J. W. Littleton, Baptist Minister, in Albemarle township, Stanly County, North Carolina.[3]

In Dec 1887, two of his son's married. Both listed their father as alive, residing in Stanly County. Both of their mothers were dead:

  1. H. G. (Gilliam) Claton, son of Martha (Elliott) Claton, married Lavinia Freeman on the 15th.[4]
  2. James M Clayton, son of Nancy (Smith) Claton, married Lula J Littleton on the 21st.[5]

James is buried in the Elliott Family Cemetery, Albemarle, North Carolina[6]
