Ann Cleary was most likely born in Eglish, King's County (now known as County Offaly), Ireland about 1815. She was the daughter of Michael Cleary and Cath Hopper.[1]

Ann married Michael Cody in Eglish, King's County (Offaly), Ireland in January 1842. The witnesses were William Cleary and Jane Hanlon.[2]

Michael and Ann had eight sons and two daughters:

  1. William Cody m1 Susanna Monica Marris m2 Bridget Mary Hurley
  2. Mary Ann Cody m Andrew O'Brien
  3. John Cody died young
  4. Sarah Cody died young
  5. Michael James Cody m Honora Mary O'Keefe
  6. Denis Patrick Cody
  7. John Francis Cody m Pauline Mary O'Callaghan
  8. Thomas Cody died young
  9. Joseph Edward Cody m Eliza Thomas
  10. Thomas Cody

Joseph Edward and the elder Thomas were twins. John and Sarah died young.

Her husband, Michael, travelled to Australia in either 1858 or 1859 and gained employment before bringing his family out as unassisted passengers aboard the "Marco Polo" in 1860. It appears that their eldest son, William, also travelled to Australia separately or with his father.

Ann and five of her children departed from Liverpool, Lancashire, England in 1859 as unassisted passengers aboard the "Marco Polo", bound for Australia. They arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on 30 January 1860, although her youngest son at the time, Thomas, died from a measles infection the day before the ship arrived.[3][4]

In June 1859, her husband Michael was working as a warder at Yarra Bend Asylum in Melbourne, Victoria. The family established their base at Heidelberg in Victoria.

Her husband died in 1876.

Ann died at the age of 70 at her home on the corner of Rose and Fitzroy St, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia on 26 December 1885.[1][5]

Ann was buried with her husband, Michael, in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Plot: MGC-RC-Comp-R-No-3.[6]

Ann Cody died intestate and probate was granted on 4 July 1902 in Melbourne, with administration by her son Michael James Cody. Affadavits were given by William and John O'Keeffe.[7]

Research Notes

The birth date is estimated from the death record. Ann has a sibling born in Eglish in 1810 so she was most likely born there too. The parish register for baptisms in Eglish is not available between January 1811 and March 1819.
