Benjamin Norton Cleveland was a noted American Silversmith. His silversmith mark may be viewed on the American Silversmiths Organization webpage. Benjamin was born August 10, 1767, in Southold, New York. About 1790, he moved to Newark, New Jersey where he was a real estate owner. He was a manufacturer of clocks, watches, and silverware, carrying on business for many years. His store was on the east side of Broad Street, about 4 doors north of Market Street. About 1821, Benjamin took as his apprentice, his namesake Benjamin Norton Cleveland, born July 2,1808, in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, who died September 21, 1847, in Fayette, Jefferson county, Mississippi. Benjamin died December 20, 1837, in Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 70 and is buried in the churchyard of the First Presbyterian Church at 820, Broad Street. [2]
