A farmer, William owned lands on the Tugaloo River, South Carolina, and also a ferry there.[1]
He was a soldier in the Continental Army, Revolutionary War. To protect his family from the cruelties of the Tories while he was gone to war, he took his wife and their eldest child, only four days old, in a boat to the fort.[1]

He died on Oct 1821 and was buried in Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery, Fair Play, Oconee County, South Carolina.[2] His will was probated on 22 Oct 1821.[6]
