Robert Clifton, Esq., was born about 1483 (based on being 23 in 1506), the son and heir of Gervase Clifton, Knt.[1] He had houses and estates at Hodsock, Blyth Parish, and at Clifton, near Nottingham.[2]
Robert Clifton first married married Alice Digby, daughter of Sir Simon Digby, Lieutenant of the tower of London[1] and Allice Willis.[3]
Robert married second before 1515 Anne Clifford, daughter of Henry, 10th Lord de Clifford.[2][4] They had four children:[1]
It is said that by Robert marrying Anne he had added "the greatest lustre of nobility" to his family, for she was lineally descended through the lines of Clifford, Percy and Mortimer from Lionel Plantagenet, third son of King Edward III.[5]
Robert died on 3 Sep 1517.[1]
The exact order of birth of Anne and Robert's children is unknown. It is known that Gervase was their eldest son and when Robert died on 9 Sep 1517, Anne was left with two children Dorothy and Gervase (based on the research of Leslie Mahle).[2] This would imply that Barbara was already married to William Jackson and Robert died young. Further research is required to confirm their order and find their birth years.
