DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I am related to this branch of the family through my wife who is a Clifton. I have a few issues I am trying to verify:

1. John "Morene" Clifton is the grandfather of my wife. Her father was John Morine Clifton, Jr. So, I believe that Morene should be Morine. The marriage certificate for John Morine, Jr clearly has the father as Morine (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C91J-5SG1-D?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A8BP8-QYZM&action=view).

2. The birth date for John, Sr. I believe is 16 Mar 1878, not August. His military Draft registration (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYTW-SPX?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AKZZR-4W3&action=view) is somewhat unclear, but it seems to be "3 16 1878". The "3" has swirls that seem to look like an "8" (but, I lean towards a "3"), and the final "8" of the "1878" is hurried, and not quite closed. My interpretations.

3. Connection to the rest of the Cliftons through Dovie: a. The 1910 Census shows “Clifton, Morine” (sp?) 30 with wife Malissa and children Hattie 6, Effie 4, and … on the next page “Mary A” at 1-1/2 yrs old.

b. The 1920 Census shows “Clifton, James M” (I think someone was speaking unclearly and “J. M.” became “Jim” or “James”) with wife Malissa 25 and children Hattie 16, Effie 14, Delsie (?) 11, Riley 8, Ruby 4, Beslie (niece) 7, and Mary (mother) 68. I believe this is the same family.

c. The 1930 Census shows Clifton, J. M.” 52 with wife Melissa 46 and children Riland 19, Ruby 14 and “J. M. Jr.” 9.

d. The 1940 Census shows Clifton, Riley 29 as Head of Household, and brother J. M. 19, and mother “Mylisa” 51.

I believe these are all the same family, and that “Mary A”, Delsie, and Dovie Mary Ann are all the same person. The connection to my wife is her memories (and her sister's memories) of Aunt Dovie and Uncle Jessie, and a child “Anniebell”. And, that they, or one of the children had “Jones” fruit and vegetable stand that was first in Biloxi on Pass Road, and later on Hwy 49 in Lyman, MS.

4. The obituary for Melissa (John Morine Clifton, Jr.'s mother) lists her as Melissa Hosford Clifton rather than Horseford.

5. The Death Certificate for John Morine Clifton (Jr.) lists his father as Morine Clifton and his mother as Melissa Hosford.

6. My wife's older brother remembers their grandmother's maiden name as Hosford.

I am not sure what you would like to do with this information, or if you are still doing genealogy for your family. If you agree, I would like to correct some of the information, and connect it to my wife's family tree. Not sure how to do that, but I will investigate.
