Biography

George was born about 1844. He is the son of George Clise and Susan Porter.

George lived in Allegany County, Maryland, all his life. He was living with his parents, George and Susanna Clise, at the time of the 1850 census (age 7) and 1860 census (age 16). In 1870, he was living and working on Jacob and Mary Winters' farm near Frostburg. He married Lavinia Winters, one of their daughters, on 30 June of that year. George and his family continued to appear in the censuses until 1930.

The Clise farm was located high up on Dan's Mountain in Allegany County. The land was rocky, steep and difficult to farm, but George was the third generation of Clises to raise their families there. Many members of the family are buried in the family graveyard on the farm. [1]

An obituary for George appeared in a local newspaper on Wednesday, 4 October 1933: [2]

Interment will be in the Clise cemetery on Dan’s Mountain.

An application for a military headstone for George states that he served in the Civil War as a private in Company "I" of the 3rd Regiment of the Potomac Home Brigade, Maryland Infantry. [3]
