Biography

Harvey Coat was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Harvey COAT[1] was the fifth child of Charles and Mary Ann COAT, born in Upper Sturt, South Australia.

Between 1948-1968 he was known to live in Prospect. He worked as a Tramways inspector and was of the Methodist faith. He was believed to have remarried several times. He married Valda McDermid in 1949 and they had at least two children.

Harvey died on 10 December 1973 at the Repatriation Hospital at Daw Park, South Australia. He was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia.

IRONBANK, June 21.- A concert and social in connection with the unveiling of the Ironbank Sunday School honour roll, was held in the church. Mr. Laffer. M.P. took the chair. Dr. Dawkins unveiled the roll, and gave a fine address. As a token of respect to the fallen soldiers the audience stood for a moment with bowed heads in silence. The roll contained the following names:- Claude Ahrens. 50th Batt. (killed), Albert Brown, Gordon Brown, Harry Brown, John Carthew. Lancelot Carthew, Alexander Coats. Alice Coats. Arnold Coats, Britton Coat's. Charles Coats, Frank Coats. Gilbert Coats, Harvey Coats, Leopold Coats, Marmaduke Coats, Norman Coats. Reuben Coats, David Davies, Cecil Edwards, Douglas Evans. Frederick Evans, Thomas Evans, Frederick Gates, Henry Gates, Jack Hancock, Charles Hill, Cleveland Hill, John Hill. Rowland Hill. Henry Holland, Matthew Holland. Percival Holland, Clifford Jacobs. 43rd Batt. (died of wounds). 'Hal Jacobs, William Lewis, William Pole, 11th Machine Guns (killed), Herbert Slater, Alfred Uren (killed), William Warland. Addresses -were also delivered by the Rev. J. Shaw. Rev. A. W. Gordon. Mr. Laffer, Mr. Silvester Smith, and Capt. Coats. The musical part of the programme, rendered by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. J. Brown, Messrs. C. J. Hill and Smith, added to the evening's success. Other soldiers present were Ptes. Rowland Hill, Albert Hill, and Hal Jacobs. A vote of thanks to helpers was tendered by Mr J. McGough, supported by Mr. T. Evans, to which Dr. Dawkins responded.
