Biography

Descendant
Descendant of Mayflower passengers John Howland and John Tilley.

Joanna Cobb was born August 16, 1718, probably in Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Ebenezer Cobb and Mary Vaughn Cobb. Joanna was named after her maternal grandmother, Joanna (Thomas) Vaughn. Joanna was a direct descendant of the Pilgrim, John Howland. Her parents moved to Falmouth, Maine, about a year after her birth. Her father, Ebenezer, died intestate, and proof that she was his daughter can be found in a proprietors' deed dated December 14, 1734 in which the heirs inherited 60 acres of land, which Joanna, her husband, Joseph Sawyer, and her brother Joseph Cobb, Jr, later sold in 1744.[1] [2]

She was married about 1733 in Falmouth, Maine, to Joseph Sawyer. He was the son of John Sawyer and Rebecka Stanford Sawyer. They had nine children, all born in Falmouth:[3][2]

  1. Ebenezer, born January 27, 1734
  2. Mary, born April 15, 1741
  3. Jabez, born December 31, 1743
  4. John, born December 24, 1745
  5. Rachel, born June 16, 1749
  6. James, born June 9, 1751
  7. Marcy, born November 14, 1753
  8. Lemuel, born February 23, 1756
  9. Rebecca, born October 13, 1760

Joseph and Joanna lived in the part of Falmouth that later became Cape Elizabeth, Maine.[2]

Joanna Cobb died November 26, 1784 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. [1][2]
