Biography

Birth and Parents

Elizabeth Cockayne was the daughter of John Cokayne and Ida Grey.[1][2][3] Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated based on her first husband's birth year (1388) and the date of her first marriage (by 1409). Elizabeth may have been born in Derbyshire, where her father held lands.

Marriages and Children

Elizabeth married first to Philip le Boteler (or Butler), Knt., son and heir of Philip le Boteler, Knt., and his wife, Elizabeth____.[1] The couple were married by 1409 (date of fine), when they were granted the manors of Bromham and Sele in Hertfordshire.[4] Elizabeth and Philip had two sons:
  • Edward,[1][5] died 30 November 1420,[4] aged 8 years[6]
  • Philip, Gent., married Isabel Willoughby.[1] He was heir to his brother, Edward and was aged 15 in 1429.[4] Philip died in 1453, leaving an heir[5]
Sir Philip died 6 November 1420[3][4][6][7] and was buried at Watton at Stone, Hertfordshire.[1]
Elizabeth married second by license dated 13 December 1421 to Laurence Cheyne (or Cheney), Esq.,[3] second son of William Cheyne, Knt., and Katherine Pabenham.[1] They had one son and two daughters:
  • John, Knt., heir of his father,[8] born about 1424, died testate July 1489, married Elizabeth Rempston and had issue[1]
  • Elizabeth, wife of Frederick Tilney, Esq., and of John Say, Knt.[1][3]
  • Mary, wife of John Allington[1]

Property

In 1422, Laurence and Elizabeth released the manor of Eaton, Bedfordshire, to Laurence's mother, Katherine Aylesbury, and others. Laurence and Elizabeth were legatees in the will of her father[1] dated 10 February 1427 and proved 1429.[9] In 1428, Laurence is listed as holding the manor of Higham in right of his wife.[10] In 1439, Laurence and his wife conveyed land in Horton, Northamptonshire to Thomas Reyners, Esq.[1]
In 1436, on the death of his mother, Katharine Aylesbury, Laurence Cheyne inherited the manor of Engaynes; in 1449, he settled it on himself and his wife Elizabeth, with remainder to their son John.[11][12]

Death

Laurence died testate 31 December 1461[3] and was buried at Barnwell Priory, Cambridgeshire.[1] Elizabeth's date and place of death are unknown. She was living in 1449.[12]

Research Notes

Disconnected Children

Lawrence Cheney and Catherine (Cheney) Bakewell were previously attached as children of Elizabeth and Laurence Cheney. No proof has been found to support these connections and the two children were detached as children of Laurence and Elizabeth in May 2022.
