Joseph was born as the twin brother of Thomas Cody in 1858 in King's County (now Offaly), Ireland. He was the son of Michael Cody and Ann Cleary. Thomas and Joseph were baptised on 26 August 1858 in the Parish of Balliboy and Killoughy, Diocese of Meath, County of Offaly (King's). Their Godparents/ Sponsors were William Mooney and Margaret Johnston.[1]
He departed from Liverpool, Lancashire, England in 1859 aboard the "Marco Polo", bound for Australia, with his mother and five of his siblings as unassisted passengers. Although they arrived on 30 January 1860 in Melbourne, Victoria, his twin, Thomas, passed away before arrival from a measles infection.[2]
On 26 November 1887, he married Eliza Thomas at St John the Baptist, Clifton Hill, Victoria, Australia.[3]

Joseph Cody died in July 1931 in Wellington, New Zealand.[4]
