Biography

Mary was born about 1726 possibly in Ireland to James Archdeacon Cody II (mother unknown). She had at least 5 siblings: Elinor Agnes, Edmund, James III, Alice, and Margaret. (See below: Research Notes).

Mary married George Lumpkin on 25 Sep 1748 in Virginia.[1] They had at least 4 children:

  1. George Lumpkin Jr m. Ann Rutledge
  2. Mary Lumpkin m. Col John Wilson
  3. Robert Lumpkin m. Druseller Hendrick
  4. Capt. John H. Lumpkin m. Lucy Elizabeth Hopson
  • Fact: Residence (1748) Amelia County, Virginia - her husband, George, received a land grant of land on the south side of the Appomotox.
  • Fact: Residence (1756) Granville County, Province of North Carolina - her husband, George, was appointed a Justice of the Peace. There are records that Mary and George conveyed land in Halifax County, and had grants of land in 1761. He bought a number of grants that been taken out by others in 1756.

Mary is named in the will of her father, James Archdeacon Cody II, dated 10 Dec 1759 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He leaves "One Shilling to her and her Heirs forever".

DAR Lineage publications recognize her husband, George, as a Capt. serving in the Virginia Line during the American Revolutionary War.

  • Fact: Residence (23 Sep 1784) Wilkes County, Georgia - land granted by Gov of Georgia (125 acres) - See Candler's Revolutionary Records of Georgia, 1908, II:912.

The History of Warren County by Virginia Wilhoit suggests that Mary and George migrated to Oglethorpe County, Georgia in 1784. Oglethorpe County was originally part of the Creek and Cherokee lands surrendered to the Colony of Georgia in 1773 and was founded in 1793. They may have settled in the area during this time. This area is now known as Wilkes County.

  • Fact: Residence (17 Aug 1790) Pittsylvania, Virginia - Mary relinquished "power" to an unknown.
  • Fact: Residence (21 Mar 1792) Wilkes County, Georgia - her husband, George of Wilkes County, signed a power of attorney to his son, Robert of Virginia, possibly Pittsylvania County.

She passed away after 17 Aug 1790 but before 8 Sep 1800 in Georgia at about the age of 70. It is not known where she is buried or the exact location of her death, possibly in Wilkes County (now Oglethorpe County), Georgia.

from: "The Lumpkin Family of Georgia" by L.L. Cody, Macon, GA, 1928

"The maiden name of my grandmother Lumpkins was Cody, and she like all the rest of those days, was a most excellent woman; just what the best of women should be. The Cody family of Warren County were her near relations; and upon investigation you will find them to be a highly respectable and meritorious family of people. Signed: Wilson Lumpkin" [2]

About Wilson Lumpkin: He was one of the grandsons of Mary and George. He served as a legislature from Oglethorpe County at age 21 and was re-elected several times; elected as Governor of Georgia in 1831 and re-elected in 1833; served as a U.S. Senator for Georgia from 1837-1841.

Research Notes

All of the DAR records indicate that she is the daughter of James Cody and Sarah Womack; however, that appears to be an error. The date timelines do not matchup if she was born in the late 1720's or early 1730's. The children of James and Sarah were born in the 1750's in Virginia. James Archdeacon Cody II, father of Mary, names her in his will as his daughter; and she would have been 20 years older than the children of James and Sarah.

Most family researchers suggest that she was born in Virginia, which is a slight possibility. Her father appears to have migrated from Ireland to America sometime around the 1730's. However, the Boaz History suggests that she was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland.[1] The timeline could be more likely she was was born in Ireland.

There are multiple versions of her death location: Lexington, Kentucky; Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia; and Wilkes County, Georgia. There are no records to indicate Mary and George lived in Kentucky. Lexington, Oglethope County, Georgia was created in 1800 from Wilkes County, Georgia. If she died between 1790 and 1800, then it would be Wilkes County, and after 1800, Oglethorpe County. Her husband's will, dated 9 Sep 1800 in Greene County, bequeaths his entire estate to his grandson, William Lumpkin, oldest son of John Lumpkin.
