John was born about 1761 in the Virginia Colony to James Cody III and Sarah Womack. He had at least 9 siblings: Ailsie, Edmund Cody Sr, Jesse, Jacob Sr, Michael, Richard, David, Alsey, and Sarah Womack.[1] [2] [3] He was a first generation American. His father migrated from Ireland to America. His mother may have been born in the Virginia Colony.
He was about 17 years old when his father moved the family to Caswell County, North Carolina, about 1775.
He moved to Warren County, Georgia after the Revolutionary War. His parents moved to Warren County, Georgia in about 1792.
John married Miss James perhaps before 1800 in Georgia and they had five children together. Four of the five children married and reared families in Alabama and the fourth child, Abner, went to Texas in 1830.
He served in the War of 1812.
He is considered one of the early settlers of Alabama.
John passed away in Pike County, Alabama in 1830, at about the age of 69.
Not to be confused with John Codey/Coday, son of William Cody and Sinai Stacy, who migrated to Indiana and died in Missouri; married to Elizabeth Sumner.
