Elizabeth (Coffey) Cleveland was a Virginia colonist.

Elizabeth Coffey

Origin

Elizabeth was probably born at the family home on Occupation Creek, St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Virginia.[1] She was apparently the youngest child of Edward Coffey and Annister Powell.

We do not have record of her birth, but she was certainly born before 1715/6, when her father's will was written, and researcher, Fred Coffey, believes she was born c. 1714.[1] Various dates, including 31 July 1714 (the birth date of Elizabeth's husband), are claimed for Elizabeth, but there is no evidence for any particular date; they are found in user-generated data bases online.

Birth date 1714 is a guess, probably based on the 1714 birth date of her husband.
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Some believe Elizabeth may have been a twin of her brother, John or Edward, but there is no evidence for this, other than user-contributed IGI. The IGI actually lists Edward and John as twins of each other, born 16 July 1700. However this is user-contributed and without any evidence. Further research is always needed to confirm user-contributed by primary documentation.[2]

Marriage and Children

Elizabeth married to John Cleveland (b 31 July 1714).[1] The marriage of Elizabeth Coffey to John Cleveland has not been documented beyond doubt, but it was a strong family legend, and it has been confirmed by Coffey family bibles, and is accepted by Coffey researchers.

Death and Legacy

Elizabeth is said to have died on 1 November 1778 at Orange County, Virginia (user-generated data bases are the source).[citation needed]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

Coffey-4482 and Coffey-20 appear to represent the same person because: same name and approximate dates, same spouse name, same son with same details

A merge has brought in a large amount of sources, most of which are user-generated, contain conflicting data, and are completely without evidence. I plan to organize the biography and remove any citations to user-generated data banks, such as IGI, Ancestry Trees, and Pedigree Resource Files. (The member who originally created the duplicate has not been active since 2012)

Please let me know if there is any objection to this plan. Otherwise, I will probably go forward in a couple of weeks (or more).

Changed name from Martha to Elizabeth (consistent with other sources and birth date).
Martha Coffey was never married to John Cleveland, her sister Elizabeth was married to John Cleveland
Are you sure her first name is Martha? Think that was her sister.
