Mary Coffield was born in 1750 in Suffolk City., Virginia,^{[1] [2]} She was the daughter of William Coffield and Mary Coffield.

Mary Coffield married James Cocke Mitchell in Nansemond, Virginia, in 1774 when she was 24 years old. They had five children.
