Biography

According to various records, Edward Collins was born September 1, 1897 (or September 16, 1897) in Johnson County, Kentucky. However, one online source shows that he may have actually originated from Matewan, West Virginia.

Edward Collins' World War I draft application from June of 1918 shows that he was at the time a resident of Standard, Kanawha County, West Virginia and employed with a coal mining company. Peter Collins was named as his nearest relative with his address being Boons Camp, Kentucky.

In 1940, Ed, his wife Dora Mae and their children lived in a rented home on a farm in John's Branch of Buffalo Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky. According to census data, he only had a third grade education.
