According to census data, George Colton was born in Retford, Nottingham, about 1792 or 1793.[1] He was baptised at East Retford on the 28th of November, 1793.[2] He was the son of James Colton and Esther Downes.
George married Sarah Bland at St Swithun church, East Retford on the 1st of March, 1814.[3][4]
At the 1841 census George and Sarah were living in the parish of East Markham, Nottinghamshire with three children - Charles (aged about 15), "Marey" (13), and Martin (7). George was working as an agricultural labourer.[5]
In 1851 George and Sarah were living at a brickyard in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire and he was working as a brickmaker. Also present was their 16 year old son Martin Colton.[1]
in 1861 George and Sarah were living at 137 Gateford Road, Worksop, and George was working as a brickmaker. Their granddaughters Mary (age 17) and Fanny (7) were living with them.[6]
His wife Sarah Colton died in 1868. At the 1871 census George was living with the family of his daughter Mary Wilkinson at Gorton, Lancashire.[7]
He died from 'natural decay' in the Union Workhouse at Clarborough, Nottinghamshire, on the 14th of March, 1881. His death was registered by the master of the workhouse, and his age was given as 83 rather than 88.[8]
