Biography

Joseph Combs/Coombs was born on 14 June 1802 in Grayson County, Virginia. He was a son of Zedekiah Combs and Elizabeth Johnson of Grayson County, Virginia.

On 23 March 1825 Joseph and Carolina Wells (aka Wills) were united in marriage in Grayson County, Virginia. Mary's uncle, Edward Jones, was the bondsman. [1]

According to the research of Josiah H. Combs, PHD, Joseph and Caroline Wells Combs had the following children:

Polly [Combs], m. Henry HAWKS
St. Clair [Combs], m. Sarah TURNER. Lived and died in Carroll Co.
Nancy [Combs], lived and died in Carroll and Grayson.
Martha [Combs] (unmarried)
Hiram Wesley [Combs], m. Fannie, probably in Indiana, moved back to Carroll, and lived there most of his life; both died at or near Winston-Salem, N.C.
Stephen Clark [Combs], m. Amanda PAYNE, lived in Carroll most of his life, but during the latter twenty or twenty-five years of his life, he lived in Washington Co., Va., and died there.
John Cannady [Combs], m. Christine DAVIS, lived and died in Carroll.
Sarah Ann [Combs], m. David Lundy; lived many years near Dublin, Va., moved to Grayson.

Note on Sarah Ann: the name of her husband originally read "Layne". However, I have seen a photo of the headstone at the cemetery where she is buried which clearly reads "Lundy"

David Carroll [Combs], m. Rachel PAYNE; lived in Carroll; father and mother of the writer.
Elizabeth Malinda [Combs], m. Orville HAWKS.
Joseph Foy [Combs], m. Lucy STANLEY[2]
The above research is cited in the work of Frederick Harmon Combs. [3]

Joseph died on 9 January 1874 in Lambsburg, Carroll County Virginia and is buried in the Hawks Cemetery.[4]

Note to family members: In the 1850 census (11th district) Joseph, Caroline and family were neighbors to the Thomas and Sally (Sarah Lundy) Davis family, whose daughter Christina would later become wife of their son John Coombs. In the 1860 census (Hillsville post office) those two families are no longer neighbors. The Combs' had moved from the Pipers Gap "on top of the mountain" to Lambsburg, which is "below the mountain", to use colloquial terms. Also important, this census records the name Coombs.

Research Note

From New River Notes: "Monday 6th Aug 1849A deed from JOSEPH COMBS to THOMAS EDWARDS conveying real estate was fully proved by the oaths of J. R. Sumner, & Bryson EDWARDS and Isaac EDWARDS subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. stopped p. 259"[5]

"1 Sep 1851 Joseph Combs Plt against Levi & Polly Payne def on a motion on a bond taken by a court for the delivery of property of the day of sale. this day came the plaintiff by his attorney and it appears by the oath of the witness that the defendants have had legal notince of this court but came not. Therefore it is considered by the court that the plaintiff recover against the defendants $20.81 cents the penalty of said bond and his cost by him about this suit in this behalf. The payment is to be discharged by the payment of $10. 40 1/2 cents with legal interest from the 26th day June 1851 until paid."[6]
Joseph had the following siblings:
