Biography

Mathias was born about 1744/45. He was the son of William Compton and Joan Browne.

There is record of a Mathias Compton who joined the continental army under Abraham Schneck in "NY in the Revolution" by Roberts. Comptonology Vol 2 No 4 p20.

In Comptonology Vol 1 No1 a Mathias is mentioned as serving in the Revolution in NY. He is said to be the son of William Compton and Jane Bolmar. This William would be Richard Sr.'s son, so this Mathias grandson of Richard would be a second cousin to our Mathias, grandson of Cornelius Sr.

This is curious, as Richard Sr had definite Loyalist associations. His daughter Mary married a British officer, William Smith.

This truly shows the Revolution as a Civil War. Our Mathias, subject of this profile, had a brother William Henry who definitely fought on the British side and moved to Canada with his family as a United Empire Loyalist. Whether our Mathias fought in NY in the Continental Army, we still have yet to verify.

I estimated his death date based on his brother William Henry's death date of 1804. This only a guestimate for working purposes. Wm Henry died a natural death in 1804. I have not yet found any death data for Mathias in Comptonology or in Harold MacLeod's book "The Loyalist Comptons of PEI"

Research still in progress.
