William Jefferson Conkin was born April 30, 1841, in Sullivan county, Tennessee a son of Hagan Conkin and Barbara (Moulton) Conkin. During the American Civil War, William served as a Private in B company, Fourth (East) Tennessee Calvary between 1861 and 1865. He was captured and released on December 4, 1861 at Greenville. He was awarded a Union Civil War pension.
Wiliam married Elizabeth J. Bragg, (1840-1911) He died October 16, 1913, and is buried in the churchyard of the Walkers Fork Baptist Church, in Sullivan County, Tennessee,
