Biography

According to the Censuses, Martha H. was born about 1843, reportedly in Illinois.

In 1860 Joel, 22, Martha, 17, and Elizabeth Cook, 15, are enumerated in the household of Pinckney, 39, and Sarah Owens, 51, in Jonesboro, Washington Co., Tennessee. All were born in North Carolina except Martha, b. Illinois.[1]

In 1870, James, 25, b. Virginia, is living in New Market, Jefferson Co., Tennessee, with his wife Martha H., 28, b. Illinois, and their children, Sarah, 3, and John W., 10/12, both b. In Tennessee.[2][3]

In 1880, M. H. Gilbert, 39, is living with Sarah, 70, and Pinckney Owen, 57, along with her children, Sarah, 14, John, 9, and Elizabeth Gilbert, 6, in Haywood County, Tennessee.[4][5]

On 2 Mar 1882 Martha Gilbert married Richard Reynolds Owen in Haywood Co., Tennessee.[6][7]

In 1900 Richard, 61, is living in Dyer Co., Tennessee, with his children, Maggie, Pink, and Sarah. He is listed as married for 30 years. No wife is listed.[8]

In 1900 Martha, 64, is living with their daughter, Carrie, 18, and her husband, Milton Mashburn, 20. She is listed as a widow, b. Oct 1835, with only this child.[9][10]

Martha Gilbert, a widow aged 79, died on 16 Jun 1912.[11]

Research Notes

A Miss M F Cook married a J E Gilbert on 20 Dec 1866 in Marshall County, Tennessee.[12] This couple are separately accounted for in the Censuses for Marshall County. The marriage date is after the date of the birth of Sarah the daughter of the Martha in this profile.

The Martha Cook of this profile was living in Washington County, Tennessee in the 1860 Census. A Martha Cook married a Jacob A Brown in that county on 1 Mar 1864.[13] A Martha Brown then married a James Gilbert also in Washington County, on 30 Nov 1865.[14]

Daughter Carrie's death crtificate gives Martha's maiden name as Cook.[15]
