Biography

James Cook was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire in about 1802. He is believed to be the son of William Cook and Elizabeth Morris.

James married Elizabeth Jane Cox at Saint Thomas, Portsmouth on the 27th of January, 1822.[1]

James worked as a 'trinity pilot' - a ship's pilot operating via Trinity House.[2][3] At the 1851 census, he and Elizabeth were living at 24 Penny St, Portsmouth with their children William Henry, George, Henry, Henrietta, Betsey, and Daniel Alfred, their daughter Mary and her husband George Cottell, and American lodger Margaret Holmes and her children.[4]

In 1871 James and Elizabeth were living with their umarried daughter Betsey (a greengrocer) and 6 year old grandaughter LIzzy Nichols at 6 King WIlliam's Place, Portsmouth.[5] King William's Place was located on the South East side of St. Nicholas's Street in Old Portsmouth.[6]

Elizabeth died in 1879. At the 1881 census he was a Naval Pensioner living as a boarder at 20 Rutland St, Portsea Island,[7]

James died from old age and congestion of the lungs on the 17th of February, 1885, at 15 Landport St, Southsea, Portsea Island. His death was registered by his son in law George Cottell.[8]
