Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Reuben Cooke was a Virginia colonist.

Origin

Reuben was born c. 1680, probably at Isle of Wight County, Virginia, a son of William Cooke and Joan Roper.[1]

According to DeWitt, Cooks of Isles of Wight, Reuben was born in 1661 in Isle of Wight County, VA. He died in the same place in 1752 at the age of 91.

" Known children of William Cook II and Joane Roper : Henry (1654-1696), John (1658-1711), Elizabeth (1658-1732) , William (1659-1740), Reubin (1661-1752) Thomas (1662-1736), Joannah (1663-1720), Sarah (1668-1720), Unknown Child (?-?)."

Reuben (Cooke-210) was a processor of land in Newport Parish between 1723 and 1743.

Family

This family originated in England.

MARRIAGE:

In 1680 Reuben was 19 and married Hanna Atkinson, daughter of John Atkinson and wife, Ann. The marriage took place in Isle of Wight.

Sources differ on the marriage date. Some site 5 July 1709 as the day of the wedding- Atkinson Gee.[1] ("Gee" unsourced and not substantiated.) Others site 1717 as the year of the marriage.

Hannah is said to be Reuben's second wife. They were married1717 in Isle of Wight C o, VA.

Children of Reubin (Cooke-210) and Hannah: John (1680-?) Benjamin (ca 1682)->1750, Nathan (ca1684-1786), William (1690-1758), Joel (ca 1692-1761) Ann (ca 1694-1750), Hannah (ca1696->1750, Thamer (ca 1698->1750), Elizabeth (ca 1700-<1750).

Some sources omit James and add Thamer, such as that of Charlie Cook.

NOTE: All online researchers except ONE show Reuben Cook(e) as father of John Cook.

The one which does not:

(http://jimcooke.tripod.com/cooke.pdf ; needs Acrobat Reader)

shows Reuben's son John died in VIRGINIA abt 1777.

Mamie Tate agrees that this is correct and this Reuben is NOT the father of John Cook who lived in Chatham Co NC.

I don't know if this mystery will ever be solved. Proceed with caution on this line, knowing that it is very possible that John is NOT the son of Reuben and Hannah!

Cook-24071 and Cooke-210 do not represent the same person because: On three different occasions in the past day, I've rejected this merge- the profile Cook-24071 represents a different Reuben Cook than that of Cooke-210. Please be patient and also read the notes on the right-hand side of the profile of Cook-24071 before proposing another merge- Cooke-210 appears to be complete--but a cleanup is advisable. Thanks from "Cousin" Dorothy C,)

Cook-24071 and Cooke-210 are not ready to be merged because: The two Reubens are actually from different eras before date on one changed by twenty years within the last couple of days. The Reubin who married an Atkinson was not the child of William II and Joane Roper as suggested. Further work separating children and parents should be undertaken. Thanks! (Numerous credible sources.)Restoring unmatched status until various family members can be assigned to their proper parents. Unmerged match completed, research pending.
Cook-24071 and Cooke-210 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles have the same birth and death dates (within 1 year), same siblings, same parents. These are profiles of the same individual. Wikitree policy is to have only one profile per individual. Please complete this merge and then include a discussion of any discrepancies in sources in the merged narrative Biography section.
