  • Isles Cooper was born before 1695 when he is named as plaintiff with his father and guardian Samuel Cooper in a York Co. VA writ asking for the partition of property by the defendants Thomas Edmunds and his wife Katherine (Dorman, John, "York Co. VA Deeds, Orders, Wills, etc, 1694-7", p.291). The lawsuit was the result of his grandfather, Thomas Iles, allegedly dying intestate (which is not true) with the heirs of his body being two daughters Katherine Edmunds and Elizabeth Cooper, deceased. This suit also shows that Isles Cooper was the only surviving male offspring of Elizabeth Iles Cooper.
  • The next record of Isles Cooper is on 15 Nov. 1714 seeking a bounty at a session of the York Co. quarter courts. "Iles Cooper preferred a claim to this Court for takeing up a runaway servant man named John Rogers belonging to John Adkins of Williamsburg upon the said Coopers producing a certificate shewing that he apprehended the sd runaway more than ten miles from his masters dwelling + he hving made oath that he never received any satisfaction thereof, It is ordered to be certified to the assembly for allowance" (York Co. D.O.W. Book 10 p.291).
  • Isles was married first to Elizabeth Calthorpe before 1716 in York Co. She was married first to John Freeman and had issue. She was married second to James Calthorpe (d.1711), son of Christopher. The will of James Calthorp is dated 19 Dec. 1711, proved 21 Jan. 171/12, items: bequeaths all to wife Elizabeth and names her executrix (York Co.D.O.W. Book 14 p.127). The Calthorpes were a noble and prolific family from county Norfolk, England, Capt. Christopher Calthorpe came to York Co., VA in 1622. His son, James, made a will dated 10 Oct. 1688, proved 26 May1690, naming sons James, Charles, Elestrange, and Christopher, daughters Barbary and Elizabeth ("York Co. D. O.W. Book 8 pp. 427-9). On 18 Mar. 1717 Elistrange Calthorp petitions the court to become guardian of the orphans of James Calthorp dec'd., Ruth and Limelick (York Co. O.W. Book 15 p. 93). The court approved this and Isles Cooper was removed as guardian on 15 Jul. 1717 (York Co. O.W. Book 15 pp. 150-1).A deed dated 16 Feb 1715/6 Saml. Cooper, Isles Cooper, & Eliz. his wife of Charles Parish, York Co sell to Wm Sheldon 225 ac. formerly in possession of Tho: Isles who died leaving 2 dau Katherine & Elizabeth, said Eliz. leaving Isles heir apparent at law. Land bounded by Cheesman's Creek and Black or Back Cr., land of Daulton Rogers & John Read. Signed: Saml. Coper, Isles Cooper and Elizabeth (with her mark). Recorded 19 Nov 1716. Release made 17 Feb 1715/6 for 50 Li. sterling, witnesses: Tho. Edmunds, Tho. Roberts, Richd Slater, John Chessman (York Co. VA, "Deeds & Bonds, vol.2", p.137 {transcribed by Charles W. Sturgeon}).
  • He married Susannah Sanders at St. Peter's parish, New Kent Co.VA in 1717. She is likely the Susannah Sanders, daughter of William Sanders christened on 24 Feb. 1702 (Colonial Dames,"Parish Register of St.Peter, New Kent Co., VA", 1904, p.36). What went wrong with this union after about three years is a mystery, but Isles abandoned her. Samuel Cooper disowned his son, Isles, in his 1719 will with the bequest of one shilling (op.cit. supra). A petition to the General Assembly by Susannah gives her account of the matter. During the Colonial period county courts could acknowledge a separation, but only the commonwealth by an act of legislature could grant a divorce.
  • September 1744, 18 George IIChapter XLI

I. An act, to enable Susannah Cooper, to sell and dispose of her personal estate, by deed or will, notwithstanding her husband Isles Cooper, shall happen to be living; and for other purposes therein mentioned. Whereas Susannah Cooper, of the county of New Kent, late Susannah Sanders, sometime in the year of our Lord, 1717, intermarried with one Isles Cooper; and at the time of such marriage, was possessed of a personal estate. II. And whereas the said Isles Cooper, at the time of such marriage, was a person of no fortune or circumstance, and in less than three years after the said marriage, left the said Susannah, and went to parts unknown to her, having first spent and consumed great part of the estate brought him by the said Susannah and also contracted several debts; for satisfaction whereof his creditors after his departure seised and took in execution the small remainder left by him of the said estate: Whereby the said Susannah was reduced to the utmost misery and distress, and was obliged, for some time, to depend upon the charity and assistance of her friends and relations for support: And the said Isles Cooper, some small time after his departure, married to another wife, who in a little time died; and soon after married again to a third wife, by who he had several children, some of which are now living. III And whereas the said Susannah hath made humble suit, by petition, to this present General Assembly, setting forth the matters aforesaid; and that she hath received no letter from the said Isles Cooper for these twenty odd years past: and also since her husband's departure, she hath by her industry been enabled to purchase a few slaves and hath also acquired a small personal estate, though not sufficient to support her in the decline of life, so comfortably as she might be supported if she was at liberty to dispose of any part of such estate..... And moreover being desirous to make provision for a son she hath by the said Isles Cooper, and to leave him the small estate that she hath... she cannot do, by law, in case her husband should happen to be living, without an act of Assembly to enable her so to do: .... (Henings, William Waller. "The Statutues at Large , A Collection of the Laws of VA", Richmond, 1819, vol.5, pp. 294-6)

  • The next two wives of Isles Cooper are a mystery. He married the third about 1720 and she died soon after without issue.

The fourth marriage may have been in Norfolk Co.Isles' daughter, Elizabeh, was born in 1728 and son, John, by 1730. Isles Cooper was named in a deed on 20 March 1728/29, Isles Cooper bought 37 acres of land from Jno. Miller and his wife Mary (Norfolk Co. Deed Book G, pg 119).Then on 17 June 1732 he sold 37 acres to William Hopper. Neither deed/Indenture gives a name of a wife of Isles Cooper. Isles appears in the 1730 and 1731 Norfolk Co. tithables rolls living with Solomon Vestry near Great Bridge, in 1732 Isles is listed alone, in 1733 he is not listed, and in 1734 and 1735 he is listed with John Taylor. In all of these entries he was living on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River between Sugg's Mill and Great Bridge. Also living nearby were Wiliam Cooper and his six sons (Wingo, Bruce & Elizabeth "Norfolk Co. VA Tithables Lists 1730-1750", passim). William Cooper (will prob. 1732), a planter and mill owner, was likely a cousin or kinsman of Isles and it is probably William's sons that appear in 1700s records in Currituck and Pasquotank Counties NC. A William Cooper patented by assignment 142 acres in Lower Norfolk Co. in 1678 and a Robert Cooper 200 acres in 1682, these are probably the ancestors of the Coopers of Norfolk (Nugent v.?, pp.?)..

  • No record of Isles Cooper appears in Currituck before the county's tithable list of 1751 when he, John Cooper, and Joseph Cooper all appear with one tithable. In 1752 Joseph and Isles appear, and in 1755 John, Joseph, and Isles (2 titthables). However, county tax records are missing between 1721 and 1751. The 1716 tithable list shows Joseph Cooper (2) and the 1750 county militia roll shows Joseph Cooper and John Cooper as common soldiers. No one with the surname Cooper appears in Currituck deeds during the 1700s and the only will, administration, or guardianship is that of Isles Cooper. A will for Joseph Cooper was filed in neighboring Pasquotank Co. in 1754, also Benjamin Cooper 1784 and Samuel Cooper in 1799.

9 June 1751, Isles Cooper, of County of Currituck, NC deeded to son, John Cooper, of County of New Kent for 12 pounds current money all slaves, stock, etc., in the possession of Susannah, wife of Isles, and belonging to the plantation in her occupation at New Kent County Court House. (Information from Linda Noble) The destruction of New Kent Co. public records by arson in 1787 make it impossible to trace the chain of title of said plantation. The will of James Simmons of Currituck, dated 15 Aug. 1753, proved March Court of 1755 shows that he married a daughter of Isles Cooper, name unknown, who was dead by the date of his will which says; "...my desire is that if my well beloved Sone (Isles Simmons) die without lawful issue then such thing or things creature or creatures mentioned in a Bill of Sale past by Isles Cooper to me for ----------, cattle & other things should be equilly dedvided between William Ferebee's children & John Cooper's child Sam. Cooper... ... likewise my desire is that my well beloved Sone Isles Simmons continue ye cear & potection of Will. Ferebee to be brought up & delt with as afore mentioned as he ye --- Ferebee shall think proper persuant to ye afore mentione will & whom I likewise constitute make & ordain my whole and sole exetr." Cooper-5168 and Cooper-399 appear to represent the same person because: They are duplicate profiles. Isles married all three women. Please merge Cooper-5168 into Cooper-399. Thank you!

Currituck County, North Carolina exists, Currituck Colorado doesn't exist. I changed the marriage place to reflect this. Maybe at one time someone had entered Currituck Co., and this was changed to Currituck Colorado instead of Currituck County.
