Marcus Alexander Cooper Sr was born on 23 Dec 1842 in Big Sandy, Benton, Tennessee, USA, son of John Cooper III (1803 - 1854) and Mary J (Payne) Cooper (1804 - 1894).
From his obit:[1]
Uncle Mart Cooper
When the report was spread over the city early Wednesday morning that Marcus A. Cooper, Sr., known to everyone as “Uncle Mart,” had died almost instantly at his home in the southeast part of town, the entire community was grieved,
Mr. Cooper was a sufferer from kidney trouble and was in the habit of arising during the night to take medicine from a bottle which was placed on a table near his bed, and owing to his poor eyesight the family had feared just such a mistake might be made and all other medicines and drugs were kept off this table. It appears that he had purchased a small bottle of acid to use as a disinfectant and preventative of chicken cholera, and evidently took it from his pocket before retiring at night and unthoughtedly put it on the table.
About four o'clock he got tip and took a liberal dose of what he supposed was the kidney medicine. Realizing his mistake, he called to his wife, telling her what he had done. With the assistance of Mrs. Mary Burton, who was spending the night there, a doctor and Mr. M.A. Cooper, Jr, were summoned and an attempt made to administer an antidote, but the sufferer passed away before anything could be done. He was born in Benton County, TN in December, 1842, and came to this county in 1859 where he has ever since resided. He was a Mason, an Odd Fellow, and a Confederate veteran. For many years, he had been a consistent Christian, being affiliated with Congregation Methodist Church. Although Uncle Mart had had more than his share of this world's troubles, he was always cheerful and was an honest Christian gentleman. Besides his aged companion, who was until their marriage in 1866 Miss Flora J Killough, he is survived by three sons and four daughters.
He married Flora Jane Killough Cooper on 29 July 1867.
Marcus died on 16 Apr 1913 in West Plains, Howell Co., Missouri aged 70.[2]
