He was born about 1590 in Northumberland, England and his parents were Ruth (Becton) and Robert Copeland (1548–1596).
Lawrence Copeland married Susanna Hill (1592–1630).
He leased from Roger Dalton, for £35s, a tenement called Dolphinlee in Bulk, Lancashire, England. Bulk is located on the north side of Lancaster, Lancashire, England while Dolphinholme is 6 miles to the southeast of Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
He held Dolphinlee, at the start of the civil war about 1642, when two thirds was sequestered for recusancy. The Vic County historical reference for sequestration is to the Royalist Composition Papers. He was possibly a Catholic [1] who were persecuted as such, but members of the family continued in their faith. Dolphinlee is thought to have been a place where masses took place. There is an unreferenced account of Dolpinlee, which may have later housed a secret chapel for Catholics from the area. [2]
He died about a week after the preceding Michaelmas (ie: the first week in October) in 1651 in Dolphinholme, Lancashire, England and was buried at St.Mary's Church Cemetery in Dolphin Leigh Manor, Lancashire, England. [3]
He bequeathed [4] the tenement to his son John Copeland, who died leaving it to an infant son, Lawrence "now called Timothy" Copeland. Because his father, Lawrence Copeland (Sr.), the recusant was "lately dead", Robert Copeland petioned for the tenancy of Dolphin Lee in November 1651. [5] Lawrence Copeland (Jr.), yeomen, also petitioned on behalf of an Ellen Dalton (p109ff). The following pages include information on the Dalton family. Thomas Dalton was the Lord of the Manor of Bulke and was specifically said to be a papist.
About the 1630s some Copelands emigrated to America to escape persecution, in particular ...
Some of his sons went to Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, England, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

Dolphinlee is in Lancashire, it's the name of a tenement in the township of Bulke. The Copelands held it from the Dalton family. The Lawrence of this period is the probable father of only some of the linked children. He is said to have been married to an Ellen, and Dolphinlee farmhouse had 1623 with the initials LCE carved on the lintel. he died in 1651. He is fairly well documented, a Catholic recusant and thus 2/3 of his land was sequestered by Parliament. He had sons Robert, John, Lawrence and Thomas. Some may have gone to the New World in the 1630s but Robert was in England in 1651 when he claimed his right to the Dolphinlee tenement.
