Biography

When John Copeland was born on 24 February 1612, in Yorkshire, England, his father, Lawrence Copeland, was 25 and his mother, Susannah Ruth Hill, was 19. He married Sarah Ratcliffe in 1640, in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight, Virginia, British Colonial America. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. He immigrated to London, England, United Kingdom in 1635. He died on 11 January 1675, in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight, Virginia, British Colonial America, at the age of 62.

Proof is needed to back up some family trees that suggest his father, Lawrence Copeland, was a Roundhead (rather than a Royalist) whose lands were confiscated.

Some Copelands emigrated to America to escape persecution, in particular U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index 1500s-1900s on ancestry.com; citing p157; arrival: 1635 Virginia; @19yrs ...

"John Copeland, son of Lawrence, born in 1612, sailed to America in 1635 on the "Assurance de Lo". He had married, possibly outside his local community, a Miss Radcliffe from Lancaster".

He supposedly later (probably post 1640) became a Quaker missionary and preached. https://www.longislandsurnames.com/getperson.php?personID=I2226&tree=Penny

He died after 1681.

Copeland a Pewterer? Fact: Pewter spoon found at Jamestown EDIT Reason This Information Is Correct:

The earliest known piece of marked American pewter is a spoon. It was dug up some years ago at Jamestown, Virginia, and bears on its handle the name of Joseph Copeland of Chuckatuck and the date, 1677. Copeland was a London-trained pewterer who apparently migrated to Virginia shortly after he had served his apprenticeship. He may or may not have made anything besides spoons. Household pewter was made for common use and, though quantities were produced, comparatively few pieces made before the nineteenth century have survived. This is especially true of spoons. In fact, what saved the Copeland for twentieth-century eyes was probably its accidental interment.

John (Joseph?) Copeland was born on February 24, 1612 in Yorkshire, England to parents Lawrence Copeland (22yrs) and Susanna Hill (22yrs). (Citation needed)

He married Sarah Ratcliffe in Isle of Wight, Virginia. They had eight children in 20 years.(Citation needed)
He died in 1682 in Isle of Wight, Virginia, at the age of 70.(Citation needed)

There are three identical profiles waiting to be merged; two managed by the same person and at least one was part of the larger upload last week- just leaving the post as this is one of the last family members to be merged or rectified

I am more than willing to give you the manager of his profile, not sure what i need to do to transfer to you.

I adopted one in the past and added what I found, not a direct ancestor to me but connected. There are many John Copeland's, yes confusing and assumptions have been made, I did try to use Family histories.

Copeland-6754 and Copeland-272 appear to represent the same person because: This should not have been ignored when uploading the profile last week just as the other family members have been merged. The only difference is a digit in the estimated birth year which is either a typo on one or justified through sources but since both profiles have managers I'm hoping it can be worked out :) Itlookslike his wife and parents have already been merged this week.

Copeland-6508 and Copeland-272 appear to represent the same person because: same person, bio dates close places the same, wife Sarah (Ratcliff) Copeland, parents and children I have in Ancestry tree.

Copeland-272 and Copeland-1835 appear to represent the same person because: Same Parents; Same Spouse; Neither profile is supported with primary sources (vital records) but there are a few secondary sources. Also, both profiles really need to be 'cleaned-up' in order for the reader to not have to wade thru all the unneeded stuff. Please approve and execute the merge. Thanks for your help.
The 1682 death date cited here seems inconsistent with numerous Quaker records that place the Quaker Missionary John Copeland in Chuckatuck, Isle of Wight, Virginia for many years after that date. Most notably, the famous Quaker evangelist Thomas Story reports from his 1698 visit to America that he stayed with John Copeland and that Copeland showed him his mutilated ear dating from the time of his tortures at the hands of the Puritans in New England. A good summary of what is known of the John Copeland history, with references to primary sources, is given here: https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/w/i/m/Kristi-Wimberley-TN/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0115.html

This is a confusing case. It seems likely that two or more different John Copeland's may have been blended. I found a number of genealogies that give various dates for both birth and death. I am not sure where the 24 Feb 1616/17 cited here originates(I'm assuming this is reported in the Julian Calendar). Many also report 1612 as the birthdate and this appears to be from a ship's manifest to Jamestown from the Assurance in 1635, where one of the passengers named John Copeland is cited as 23 years old. Since Quakerism emerged in England after 1648, the John Copeland of the Assurance seems unlikely to be the Quaker missionary John Copeland. I also, have found various death dates listed, but if this John Copeland is the Quaker Missionary, the 1682 date is inconsistent with numerous Quaker records.

Tried to tidy up this profile, keeping the valid sources, deleting the links that didn't work, and getting rid of the multiple bullet points. I am still concerned about the duplicates with this person, but I lack the source information to make good decisions about merges. Perhaps someone with sources and more familiarity with this family can review this profile with Copeland-898 [[1]] and Copeland-1260 [[2]]. They have too many overlaps (for instance, all three profiles are children of the exact same parents) for my comfort. Thank you for your help!
Copeland-1260 and Copeland-272 appear to represent the same person because: Looks like duplicate profile. Please review for merge. Thank you.
