Biography

James Sanford Copley (son of James B, Copley and Rebecca Marcum) was born 1828 in Virginia/West Virginia and died August 08, 1899. He married Virginia Belle Ferguson on 1850 in Wayne County, Virginia, daughter of Kelly Ferguson and Arisla McGinnis Amos. Notes for James Sanford Copley: James Sanford Copley was called "Yankee Jim". He was in the timber business and he was a younger brother to William H. Copley, born in 1820. W. H. Copley was the first Cabell County Senator. This information came from Fred Cain in a personal interview. According to 1880 Census for Lawrence Co., Kentucky, James S. Copley and Virginia Copley were 51. This would make their birth 1829. James is listed as a farmer and Virginia as keeping house. According to the 1850 Wayne County Virginia Census he had an estate of $400. 1870 Census lists estate of $2000. On July 24, 1897 he deeded 50 acres, more or less, to his daughters Rebecca Alexander, Virginia Kirk, Gertrude Burke, Amanda Cassell, and Sarah A. Cain, in exchange for decent are. His sons, J.D. Copley, William A. Copley, and Fremont Copley received their advancements in said estate. The farm was in Lawrence County "at the beginning of the mouth of drain emptying into Tug River." It was adjacent to the David Simmons and Elendsey Sammons, Sr.farm. On February 23, 1900, Charles W.. and Rebecca McKenzie, sell their 1/5 interest in said farm to W. T. Cain. Deed was produced in Radford, VA. This was Rebecca's second husband. On February 12, 1900, W. T. buys out Solomon and Amanda Cassell, Gertrude Burke, and Lee and Virgie Kirk.
