Biography

Richard Coppins was born about 1797 in Lenham, Kent, England to Arthur Britcher Coppins and Ann (How) Coppins. He was christened in Lenham on 29 Jan 1797.[1]

Richard Coppins married Sarah Slater or Suter (Suter) on 21 Dec 1817 in Southampton, Hampshire.

Richard and Sarah had at least eight children: Arthur Coppins (1818-), John Coppins (1821-), Richard Coppins (1823-), Mary Coppins (1827-), William Henry Coppins (1829-), Sarah (Coppins) Ashwood (1831-1871), Edward Coppins (1833-1838), and George Coppins (1837-).

It seems Richard immigrated to America where he remarried - though Sarah and their children remained in England and she is "widowed" on some census records. Did Richard and Sarah separate? Did he abandon her to move to America? Are there perhaps two separate Richard Coppins that have been mistakenly compiled into one, and Sarah's husband actually passed away?

Assuming they are the same Richard, his life in America:

Richard Coppins married the widow Mary Ann Taft (nee Walker) on 21 Nov 1850 in Lee, Oneida County, New York. Mary had at least two children from her first marriage.

Richard and Mary had at least three children: Mary (Coppins) Stone (1851-1935), Richard B Coppins (c1852-), and Lois (Coppins) Adsit (c1856-).

In 1855 Richard Coffens (age 56, Tailor) lived in Albion, Oswego County, New York with his wife Mary A (34), stepdaughter Susan Taft (14), stepson Harvey Taft (10), daughter Mary (3), and son Richard (2).[2]

In 1860 Richard Coppins (age 61, Tailor) lived in Albion with his wife Mary A (38) and three children: Mary (8), Richard (7), and Lois (3), as well as stepson Harvey Taft (15).[3]

In 1865 Richard Coppens (age 67, Tailor) lived in Albion with his wife Mary A (43), stepson H C Tofft (20), and three children: Mary (13), Richard (12), and Lois (8).[4] This census also states that both Richard and his wife had been married twice, and that his wife was the mother of 7 children.

In 1875 Richard Coppins (age 78) lived in Albion with his wife Mary (53), son Richard (22), daughter Lois (18), and chore boy Chas Rugg (7).[5]

In 1880 Richard Coppins (age 83, Tailor) lived in Albion with his wife Mary A (58, Keeping House), son Richard B (27, Book Keeper in Store), son-in-law William H Adsit (25, Works in Tannery), daughter Louie Adsit (23), and boarder Elizabeth M Adsit (27).[6]

Richard Coppins passed away in 1883 or 1884 (gravestone says 1883). He is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Altmar, Oswego County.[7]
