Biography

Margaret, daughter of Piers Corbet, married Gruffith Warren, son of Griffin Warren and Mathilda Strange.[1]

Children

  1. John Warren[1] b. c 1365[2]
  2. Griffen Warren, Esq. b. c 1378 [2]

Research Notes

Marlyn Lewis gives her husband Gruffith Warren's birth year as c.1340 and lists sons John (b c1365) and Griffen (b c1378). Lewis cites "Brent Ruesch's Research Notes" for their names but not their estimated birth years (or other details of her entry in the database).[2] The entries for her parents and beyond, have no sources at all.[3]

See Warren Line of Descent from Visitation on the profile for Margaret (Warenne) Mainwaring (abt.1401-1452). But the timeline given there doesn't work - it leads to impossible birth year for Hamlin

  • (1275) Hamlin Plantagenet base son of H 2 (reigned 1154-1189) = Isabella da & hr to Wm Earl Warren

In the Visitation of Shropshire 1623 v,2 she's on page. 348, the daughter of Piers (Peter) Corbett, not Robert Corbet. [1]

From the profile of Margaret (Warenne) Mainwaring (abt.1401-1452):

Writ of 01 Dec 1417 for proof of age of Margaret daughter of John Wareyn, sister and heir of Griffin, son and heir of John Wareyn. She is in the custody of Philip de Eggerton by the grant of Roger de Acton, knight, to whom the keeping of the lands was committed [CPR 1408–13, p.465]. Proof of age at Whitchurch, Shropshire on 21 Jan 1418. The jurors say that she was born at Ightfield and baptised there on 11 June 1401, and is now aged 17 years and more.[4]

The profile of Margaret (b c1401, married Mainwaring) also has a "Disambiguation" section with seems to say she - Margaret (b c1401, married Mainwaring) - lived 100 years later. It offers this about the daughter of Griffith Warenne:

Margaret Hill née Warren. Margaret Warren, born about 1378 in Shropshire, England, wife of Griffith Hill, and the daughter of Griffith Warenne.

Another section of the profile for Margaret (b c1401, married Mainwaring) - - says (in part):

Noted genealogist Todd Farmerie notes that the Warenne of Ightfield line, that apparently descends from Warenne of Whitchurch, and in turn from a junior Warenne family, separate from the line of the earls at least as early as the Conquest...as it appears, is largely bogus. The wives can't be trusted, and the exact connections are dubious. Even the contemporary records are problematic to interpret. This has been discussed extensively in the archives (search for Warenne and Ightfield or Warren and Ightfield).[5]

Another post by Todd Farmerie[6] goes into detail about several Griffins in the records, including the following, which was commenting on a previous post that had the 7. & 8. lines:

> 7. Griffin de Warren of Ightfield, m. Margaret Corbet, daughter of Sir Piers de Corbet
> 8. John Warren of Ightfield, d. ca. 1413, m. Matilda/ Margaret/ Emma, daughter of Sir John Cheney of Willaston.
"The ipm of John, heir of Griffin de Warren reports his death 4 Feb. 1412/3, leaving son and heir Griffin aged 13. Griffin's ipm reports his death 5 Oct. 1415, heir sister Margaret aged 13. A couple of years later, her proof of age gave her bapt. 11 Jun. 1401.[6]

The ipm information is included as top-of-profile text (as of 14 September 2022) on son John's profile - John Warenne (abt.1375-1413).

The death information belongs to a different Margaret Corbet, wife of Thomas Erdington, MP (Erdington-17), who needs her own entry. Please see Thomas Erdington's entry in History of Parliament Online, https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/erdington-thomas-1371-1434.

Is something fishy with this line of descent?
