Biography

Lilias Williamson Corbett was born on 25th April 1833, and baptised on 6th May 1833 in Cromarty, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. She was the daughter of John Corbett and Margaret Fraser.^[1]

In the 1841 census, Lily, aged 8, was with her uncle, William Corbett and his family in Tain, Cromartyshire.^[2]

In the 1851 census, she was still in Tain, niece of the head of household, aged 17, no occupation listed. She is with William Corbett (head), his wife Margaret, his daughters, Hannah & Margaret, & William's widowed mother Christy.^[3]

At the age of 26, she migrated to Australia aboard Wanata, departing Liverpool on 20 June 1860, and arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on 28th September of the same year.^[4][5] She was to work for her brother-in-law, Robert Hamilton in Bellarine for a period of 3 months.

On 12th July 1861, at a private dwelling in Bellarine, she married John Fleming.^[6] Robert Hamilton was one of the witnesses to her marriage.

John and Lilias lived initially in the Bellarine Peninsular area. Later John worked at Mt Noorat Station.^[7] They had seven children, one of whom died in infancy.

Lilias died at Noorat in 1887, aged 51.^[8]
