Research Notes

There is no primary source which identifies this Sarah Cordes as daughter of Francis Cordes and Marianne Porcher of South Carolina. Francis Cordes apparently had no children except a child who died shortly after birth.[1] These parents have been removed until additional sources can be found.

Notes for SARAH CORDES: Taken from http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/l/a/Lynn-Blackwell-Quincy/GENE5-0022.html

She was a "great lady, she dressed for dinner every day" per book titled Ten Thousand Plunkett's. Also mentioned was the following:

The information on Sarah Cordes was taken from an undated sketch pertaining to the Genealogy of the Dowden family written by Miss Sarah Ann Pilcher who was born 1815-1820 and who was the granddaughter of Reuben Plunket and Nancy Pervis, and the great-granddaughter of William Plunkett and Sarah Cordes.

Our great-great-grandfather Plunkett was an Episcopal Clergyman whose father, Lord Plunkett was the first of the family that immigrated to America in the latter part of the 17th Century. He settled in Carolin County, Virginia.

Lord Plunkett returned to England and our ancestor married a Miss Monroe who numbered a President of the United States amongst the descendants in her family. They had two sons, one of them, William was our great- grandfather. He held office of Tobacco Inspector for that part of the colony that now comprises Viginia and Maryland. His office was conferred by King George III and was quite a sinecure ( an office requiring little or no work, yielding profitable returns ) in colonial times.

He married a very elegant and accomplished lady, SARAH CORDES, pronounced KORDAY, her grandfather was one of the many HUGUENOTS who fled from Papal persecution in France an settled on the Ashley and Cooper Rivers in South Carolina, where our ancestor found and married her. They had seven sons and four daughters.
