Biography

Johannes was born January 15, 1756 in Westhofen in what is now Germany. [1]

His family emigrated to Halifax in 1752 aboard the "Pearl" and settled in Lunenburg in 1753. He appeared in the family in the victualing lists for Halifax and Lunenburg.[2] He married Maria Franck on February 27, 1770.[3] He died in 1772.[4]

Johannes (or John) apparently died without a will being of such a young age. His wife Maria signed off a declaration giving up her right to be the executor of his estate.[5]

Resignation of Maria Elizabeth Gorkum, March 25, 1773. Est. John Gorkum 1776 Lunenburg Whereas Johan Gorkum late of Lunenburg in the Province of Nova Scotia yeoman, Deiing [sic] Intestate, and whereas my own afairs [sic] will not allow me to take on me the Execution of the Estate of the Deceased. I do by these presents Renounce the Execution of the said Estate, being fully Determined not to take out Probates of the same. Given under my hand and seal this 25th Day of March in the year of Our Lord 1773. her Mark Maria Eliz Gorkum Sealed and Delivered in the presence of his Mark George Franck

His name at birth in Germany would have been "Gorkum". The Corkum spelling did not evolve until some time after arriving in Nova Scotia.
