Alexander was born in 1797 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland to James Cormack and Isobel Rosie[1] and was baptized on July 22, 1797. [2]
Alexander married Anne Nicolson on February 17, 1821 in Canisbay, Caithness, Scotland.[3]
On the 1851 Scotland Census[4]Alexander was listed as 63 years old still living in the Parish of Canisbay and his occupation was Farmer & Worsted Hand-loom Weaver on 7 acres with 2 servants. His household members included his wife Ann, James (21 years old), Janet (12 years old - likely Jane), Alexander (9 years old), Donald (9 years old), Edward (6 years old), and John (3 years old).
On the 1861 Scottish Census[5], a 63-year-old Alexander's occupation was a Worsted Hand-loom Weaver living at Freswick, Canisbay, Caithness with his 58-year-old wife Ann. Their household also included James (31 years old) the Farm Manager, Janet (26 years old - likely Jane), Alexander a Joiner Apprentice (19 years old), Donald a Blacksmith Apprentice (19 years old), Edward a Boatbuilder Apprentice (16 years old), and John (13 years old), grand-daughter Ann Munro (1 year old) and a general labourer, Thomas Mackay who was 19-years-old.
In 1871[6], 72-year-old Alexander was a Worsted Weaver & Crofter living in Canisbay with his 67-year-old wife Ann, their 38-year-old son James (listed as special needs) along with 21-year-old son John and his 24-year-old wife, Marjory.
Alexander died at Freswick on March 11, 1879, at 80-years-old, and is buried in the Canisbay Parish Churchyard with his wife Ann who predeceased him, and their son James.[7]
