Summary: Afonso Augusto da Costa was a lawyer, university professor, republican politician and statesman. He was a major figure of the Portuguese First Republic, three times prime minister, deputy in the Chamber of Deputies and the Minister for Justice.
Afonso Augusto da Costa was born on the 6th of March 1871 in Seia, Guarda, Portugal.[1] Was baptized on 8 April as a foundling.[2] His brother and sister also were baptized as foundlings. Was recognized by his father in a public scripture on 13 April 1881 and by his mother in a public scripture on 28 October 1884. His parents married on 13 April 1885 in Seia.[1] Their children were legitimized at that time.[1]
He was given up at birth; deposited in a box that passed into the church of Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Seia.
