Biography

It has been said that Henry Cottrell married Mary Polly Murray. Many researchers have given Mary "Polly Murray as Henry's wife and I will leave Henry's wife's name as Mary Polly Murray. We do know that Henry was born right around 1775 according to the census records from Kentucky. In the 1850 census, Henry was aged 75 and born in South Carolina. No one is exact with Henry's date of death (sometime after the year 1850), and those who have been researching this line of Cotterells have placed his burial site in the Pine Grove Cemetery located on the land Henry once settled on in Hart County, Kentucky.

He was in Hart County, Kentucky by 1804 because he is on the tax list of 1805.

Henry was said to have been a deeply religious man, no doubt raised by parents who had been indoctrinated by the teachings of John Wesley. He had never in his life tasted alcohol in any form. On one occasion he was bitten by a rattlesnake, and when offered a whisky; (the common remedy) he refused to take it, saying that if he died it would not be with whiskey on his breath. He recovered with no ill-effects.
