Biography

When Mary Ann Cotton was born c.1840 in Georgia, her father, Peter, was 26, and her mother, Louvisa, was 23. She married Edward Lumpkin Gaither (1834-1919) on November 10, 1852, in Talladega, Alabama;[1] they had at least six children:

  • William Gaither (c.1854 AL–aft.1870)
  • Samuel Dickerson Gaither (1856 AL–1926)
  • James Gaither (c.1859 AL–aft.1870)
  • Reuben Gaither (c.1860 AR–aft.1870)
  • John Gaither (c.1862 AR–aft.1870)
  • Joshua Gaither (c.1865 TX–aft.1870)

She is last enumerated on July 25, 1860 in Wester District of Upshur County, Texas; see census below.
