Early Roads in Gilmer county, West Virginia

Extracts from Gilmer County, West Virginia Court Order Book about some roads, mainly connected to the Stout family:

April 1848 term, first day, p. 319: "Ordered that Absalom S. Stout, William Stout & Daniel J. Stout, after being duly sworn to view and mark a way for a road from William Cottrals down Sliding hill run to Hezekiah Stouts Mill, and that they make report to court according to law."

April 1848 term, first day, p. 319: "Ordered that Francis Vannoy Cornelius Gainer and Robert P. Bush after being first duly sworn do view and mark a way for a road from the mouth of Tanners Fork up said creek to Philip Fishers and that they make report to court according to Law."

Sept. 1848 term, 1st day, p. 395: "Ordered that Roswell Messenger be surveyor of the road in the room of Wm. H. Snider resigned from the first drain above Millstone point and Stuarts creek to the foot of the Stuarts creek hill and tha all the hands formerly belonging to the said Snider do attend and assist the said surveyor to keep his said road in repair." Sept. 1848 term, 1st day, p. 395: "On the motion of George W. Maze + It is ordered that Solomen Heater, Hezekiah Stout Jr. and James Maze after being first duly sworn do view and mark a way for a road from the mouth of Dusk camp run to Maze's Mill and that they report to court according to Law."

Sept. 1848 term, p. 394: Absalom Stout, Daniel J. Stout and William Stout the persons appointed to view and mark a way for a road form William Cottrals down Sliding hill run to Stouts mill along which William Cottral has applied for a road this day made report in these words "In compliance with an order of Gilmer County Cort made at the April term 1848 after being sworn we have viewed and marked a way for a road through the Lands of Silvester Stout, Ezekiel T. Stout, John R. Allena nd Hezekiah Stout Senr from William Cottrals to Hezekiah Stouts Mill a distance of abut two miles and we believe it will be road of utility we believe there is no objection to the road by the land holders with the exception of John R. Allen. Whereupon the court being of opinion that the road applied for will be convenient, it is ordered that John R. Allen one of the proprietors of the land through which the same is proposed to be conducted, be summoned to appear here forthwith to show cause if any he can why the said road should not be opened."
