Biography

Alfred was born in 1875.[1] He passed away in 1933.[2][3][4] In his will he splits his estate to his "three illegitimate children" Alfred Edward Courtney, Iris Rose Ridings wife of Keith, and Arthur Thomas Courtney.

COURTNEY Widespread regret has been occasioned in Whangarei-and district by the news of the death of Mr Alfred Charles (“Taff’”) Courtney, which took place yesterday afternoon in the Whangarei District Hospital, whore he had been a patient for three weeks, and had borne a very serious affliction with great fortitude. The deceased gentleman provided a splendid example of assiduous service as one of the staff of the local gasworks, where he had been occupied for the past. I8 years, very rarely taking a holiday vacation. Thereby he held the high esteem of the proprietary and the management, as well as the regard and respect of the community generally. Mr Courtney, who was 58 years of age and was born in Whangarei, continued In his employment until about two months ago, when his illness "compelled him to relinquish duty”. Up to the age of about 20 years he took a prominent part in local sports, with special reference to Rugby football. He saw service in the Boer War, as a member of the Eighth New Zealand contingent. Two sons and one daughter remain to mourn their loss. They are: Messrs A. E Courtney (married), of Purua and A. T. Courtney (single), of Whangarei, and Mrs K. G Ridings, of Kawakawa. There are three brothers and three sisters in survival of deceased. The former comprise Messrs J. W. Courtney and W. H. Courtney, of Whangarei, and A. F, Courtney, of New Plymouth, while the latter are Mesdames C. L. Casper (New Plymouth), H, Dempster (Whangarei), and G. Wannop (Thornton, Bay of Plenty). To all of these relatives named the sympathy of a large circle of friends will be extended in their bereavement. The funeral will leave the hospital at 2 p.m. tomorrow for the Maunu Cemetery, where the Rev. H. T.
