Sydney was born in 1922[1]. He was the son of Thomas Cowan and Sarah Acheson.
He left Ireland for the UK as a young man. His older brothers Alfred and Alec had preceded him to the UK, and sent him funds to be able to follow them across and take a job in Essex. In 1947, he married Freda Joyce Wallis in Thurrock, Essex[2].

His profession in 1964 was listed as "machine supervisor"[4].
After his father's death in Ireland in 1951, Sydney's mother came to the UK to live with him, at least for some period of time (she later moved to a senior's home in Slough and passed away in Slough in 1964).
Sydney passed away in Thurrock in 2001[5]. He is survived by his wife, daughter and two grand-daughters.
