Biography

Samuel (Craik) Craig Craige was a pioneer settler of Orland .

Samuel was born in 1731. He is the son of Jacob Craig and Francesca Consalves-Duk.

Dea. Samuel Craig was born on July 25, 1731 in Newtown, Queens, NY and removed to Massachusetts Bay. He was the son, and 1st born child of John and Mary Craig.

Samuel Craige married Mary Conn on March 27, 1755 at Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay. Sometime after 1756 but before 1758, Samuel and Mary removed to Winchendon, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay where they lived for about 6 years. Then sometime between summer of 1764 & fall of 1766, Samuel and Mary moved northeast to Gorham, Cumberland, Province of Maine, Gorham having been incorporated in 1764. Their final move would be further "Downeast" finally landing in the Eastern River Township 2 (now Orland), Hancock County, Province (now State) of Maine where they continued to raise their family. They had children born in Groton, Winchendon, and Orland, these children being as follows:

-John (b. Jan. 11, 1756 in Groton)
-Samuel Jr (b. Feb. 7, 1758 in Winchendon, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay)
-Mary (b. Jul. 29, 1760 in Winchendon, m. Ezekiel Harriman), d. Jun 21, 1830 in Orland, Hancock Co.)
-Anne or Anna (b. Apr 20, 1762 in Winchendon)
-Sarah (b. 20 May 1764 in Winchendon)
-Elizabeth Kendall (b. September 10, 1766 in Orland, Hancock Co., Province of Maine, m. 1st Daniel Darling in 1794, m. 2nd Daniel Blaisdell in 1805, d. Mar 7, 1851 in Orland)
-Andrew (b. May 17, 1770 in Orland, m. Olive Winslow in Orland on June 3, 1793, d. April 18, 1850 in Michigan)
-Ursula

As above described and documented in 1790, per the 1st Federal Census, Samuel Crage and his household of 5 were residing in Eastern River Township 2 (now Orland), Hancock, Province of Maine. His household that year included 1 male over 16 (Samuel Sr.--self), 1 male under 16, and 3 females. This 1790 Census (for Eastern River Township 2) also included enumeration of three other "Crage" households--likely these were households of Samuel's sons, these three sons being "Samuel Crage Jun'r," "John Crage," and Andrew Crage (Andrew's a household of one).

The 1800 Federal Census for Orland recorded Samuel's previous place of residence (i.e. "From Whence Emigrated") as "Gorham." Samuel's household (in 1800) of 4 enumerated 1 male over 45 (Samuel Sr--self) and 1 female over 45 (likely wife Mary) plus 1 female age 26 to 44 and 1 female under 10 (likely a daughter and granddaughter). Also enumerated in the 1800 federal census are the households of Samuel Jun'r and John, recording their relocation to Orland from "Gorham."

Per the 1810 Federal Census, Samuel and Mary were still residing in Orland, Hancock, Province of Maine.

With recorded births and birth locations of his children and his household per the 1st three federal censuses, we are able to map the sequential residences of Samuel and his family.

Samuel of Orland passed away at the age of 84 years, 6 months in Pushaw, Penobscot, Province (now State) of Maine on February 2, 1815, quoting the Orland record: "Feb'y 2, 1815, Samuel Craige; Aged 84 years and 6 months died at a place called Pushaw of Penobscot."

Research Notes

1) Orland became a town in 1800. Prior to its township, the territory had several names including Eastern River Township 2; Alamasook; Township #2 East of the Penobscot River (Plantation); and Township #2 West of Union River.

2) By today's routes, Methuen, Massachusetts is about 21 miles from Groton, and from Groton to Winchendon is about 32 miles. Distance from Boston to Methuen is about 40 miles.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
