George Crawford is Notable.

George was born in 1798. He was the son of Peter Crawford. He passed away in 1872.

George Walker Crawford was born on December 22, 1798, in Columbia County, Georgia. He was the fourth son of Peter and Mary Ann Crawford. His father was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War from Virginia who had settled in Georgia on a bounty grant, which the state of Georgia had set aside for "those who had fought for independence. George grew up on the family's estate, heavily influenced by his father, and his cousin William H. Crawford, who were well known for their political service. He continued his education at New Jersey School of Law that later became Princeton University. He graduated with a bachelor's degree there in 1820 and then received a Masters Degree from Franklin College which was the founding College of the University of Georgia.

In 1826, George Crawford married Mary Ann MacIntosh. They had four children in their marriage: William Peter, Sarah MacIntosh, Anna Elizabeth, and Charles. George W. Crawford embarked on his political career the following year, accepting a gubernatorial appointment to become Attorney General of Georgia in 1827 .

In 1828 George Crawford challenged Thomas E. Burnside to a duel over the defamation of his father in an article Thomas Burnside wrote sharply criticizing the political views of his father, who was then declining in health. Crawford regarded it as an attack on his father's good name

He shot Burnside dead which caused Georgia to pass a law that prevented persons involved in duels from holding office. The restriction only applied to duels fought after the law was enacted and did not affect Crawford's career.

In 1837, he was elected to the Georgia General Assembly as a member of the House of Representatives for Richmond County Georgia, then Governor of Georgia in 1843 and reelected in 1845. He was appointed Secretary of War by President Zachary Taylor in 1849
