Biography

Spelled Kriebeling in Germany. Baptized Jul 4, 1706. Farmer and owned thousands of acres in Sussex Co and Hunterdon Co. Named John Creveling in his will dated Aug 24, 1870 (written by someone else as he could not write). Both he and his wife belonged to the 1st Baptist Ch, Wantage Twp, Sussex Co, New Jersey at one time. He bequeathed 20 pounds to each son not designated otherwise. Buried in private cemetary in West Portal (formerly West End), New Jersey. (See Christinas notes. ....Creveling Family History And Genealogy, 2nd Edition. pg 5


Johannes and Christiana Crivling, who were born in the Netherlands. They were married Sep 6, 1737 by Johannes Caspavius Everhartus, Minister, in Ban Maxcein, Wolverlingen, Holland. (It is now Wolvaga)/ The name in Dutch is Greveling from the body of water, Grevelingen, near Rotterdam. They came to th US on a ship called the "Spotted Cow", and landed in Hoboken, NJ about 1750. Some descendedants have changed the name to Crevling or Crevelling.

    great-great grandparents, Johannes and Eva Loecher Creveling, Sr., came to America from Germany and settled in West Portal (formerly Jugtown), Hunterdon County, New Jersey. They are buried in the Creveling Family Burying Ground in West Portal, NJ.

    great grandfather Andrew Creveling, his great grandfather, was born in or near Maxsain, Germany on February 28, 1743. He migrated with his family from Germany to America as an infant. Private Andrew Creveling, at the outbreak of the Revolution, entered the Continental Army and served throughout the war. He was in the battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778, and on that day his son Samuel, the grandfather of Lewis M. Creveling, was born. After the close of the war, Andrew moved with his young family to Columbia County, Pennsylvania.

    --- grandfather Samuel Creveling, the grandfather of Lewis M., was a farmer. After his marriage in 1803, he moved to a farm which he bought. He cleared land and erected a cabin; the site of which is not far from the place where Lewis M. Creveling lived. His farm, at that time, comprised 350 acres. During the war of 1812, he was drafted, but several young men wanting to go in his place, and having a young family of his own, selected one as a substitute. Samuel Creveling lived on his farm until his death, in 1859, at the age of eighty-one. His wife Catherine Willets died about 5 years before him. Both are buried in Zion graveyard, this county. They had the following [8] named children: Andrew, Isaiah, Samuel, Russell and Rachel, all deceased. Peter, John and Sarah are living.
    -- father Isaiah Creveling, the father of Lewis M. Creveling, was born on May 29, 1810, died Dec 29, 1864. he wed Catherine M daughter of Andrus Fellows they had 6 children, 2 died infants 4 living Andrus F, Samuel W, Rachel B wed Zaphariah L Kile, & Lewis M our subject.
    - Lewis M. Creveling was born on September 2, 1838. On August 8, 1862, he enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Forty-ninth Pennsylvania Volunteers, the "2nd Bucktail Regiment,” in which he served until the close of the war. ... Lewis M. Creveling was in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and twenty other engagements. He went out as a private, was promoted successively corporal, first sergeant and commissioned second lieutenant, which rank he held on his return. ... and was fortunate to escape with only one wound all through the service. He was shot through the left cheek at Spottsylvania Court House on May 13, 1864. ... On September 11, 1865, he married Angeline Moss, daughter of Joseph Moss born Feb 13, 1809 and Emily Trescott born April 6 1809, of Fairmount, Luzerne County.
    Mr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Creveling had eight children: Isaiah Osborne, Francis, Eveline, Joseph C., Albert E., Andrus Fellows, Katie Emily and Irvin, who died in infancy.

    Andrew Crevling Born 28 Feb 1743, Netherlands, Died 18 Feb 1814, Columbia Co, PA, Married 18 Jun 1771 by Rev Hanna (McHannah?) to Margaret Patrick (died 1797). He entered the Continental Army at the outbreak of the Rev War and served until the end. He was at the Battle of Monmouth, 28 Jun 1778 [see page 437 of History of Columbia and Montour Counties, PA, by JH Battle, 1887]. He was a Pvt on the NJ Continental Line. Moved to PA as he was given land grant for service as a soldier and resided in Afton, Columbia Co, PA, after 1790. A farmer and fishery owner. He belonged to the Society of Friends (Quakers). Buried with 2nd wife in Afton cemetery, Almeda, near Bloomsburg, PA, a private Creveling cemetery. Also listed in DAR Patriot Index.
