Arthur Croll was a 'Wright' or woodworker, a skilled artisan or tradesman who lived an unsettled life, moving between several East Coast of Scotland, from Kincardineshire in the south to Aberdeen in the north. He married Elizabeth Davy in Fordoun in 1815 and the couple moved to Montrose, then Aberdeen, then Balmakelly, having five children at two-year intervals during that time.
Birth
Arthur Croll was born about 1787 in Kincardinshire, Scotland.[1] See research note3 below.
'Croll' name
The family name seems to have been consistently spelled 'Croll' until some time in the early 1850s when it was also spelled 'Croall' (in son James Fullarton Croll's death certificate) and 'Croal'. The famiily members who migrated to Australia retained the spelling 'Croll'.[2]. However the spelling 'Croal' spelling was not new at the time of the Croll family's change, as it was recorded that David Croal , a wright, son of Alexander , tailor in Fettercairn, ... [married] Margaret Crawford 28 Mar 1725.[3]
Arthur's Great-Grandson Robin Croll researched the family name, finding evidence that it originated from the Danish 'Krone'.[4][5] 'Croll' is clearly related linguistically to 'Krone' (Denmark), 'Krol' (Poland), 'Kroll' (Prussia) and 'Kaiser' (Germany). There are several other suggestions, including one that the name has French connections; this could be plausible given a Viking pathway. However, the evidence is sparse and unconvincing despite some support from DNA evidence (Ancestry).
Marriage
There is little reliable information about Arthur's early life prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Davie in Fordoun on 10 Jun 1815, although he is known to have been a carpenter and joiner.[6] The family moved around the East coast, settling in Aberdeen from 1819 to 1827 and possibly moving from Old Aberdeen to New Aberdeen during that time.[7][8]
Children
Arthur and Elizabeth had four sons and two daughters:
Margaret Croll, born 12 Jul 1815 in Montrose, Shire of Angus, Scotland[9][10][11] and baptised in Montrose, Scotland in 1815.[9]
David Croll, born 20 May 1827 in Balmakelly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[20] at Marykirk, Kincardinshire, Scotland, and baptised 03 Jun 1827 in Marykirk, Kincardineshire, Scotland[21]
All the sons moved to Edinburgh and three of the four then migrated to Australia, settling in three different areas of the Colony of Victoria. It was a family of artisans: Arthur was a 'wright', son William a blacksmith (and his father-in-law a mason) and son David, his father-in-law and James Fullarton were 'joiners'. The family residence in Chapel St Aberdeen was, at the time, also quite near the Gilcomston Estate, which might have been a source of employment for the family.
Occupation
Arthur is recorded as having been a 'Wright'.[19] The usual meaning of this term is a carpenter or cabinet-maker,[22] but it can also be applied in a wider sense to include architects and surveyors, designing and supervising buildings.[23] However, the fact that three of his sons became wood or metal workers suggests that Arthur was most likely to have been a carpenter and joiner in the modern sense. He was, therefore, a skilled tradesman who had served an apprenticeship but who was working for other people rather than in his own business.
Religion
Available marriage and baptism records show that Arthur and his family belonged to the Church of Scotland, a tradition that would be kept by the family in some way for the next two centuries.
Aberdeen
Aberdeen is one of Scotland's most ancient cities, able to trace its history back to pre-historic times. At the time of Arthur Croll's life there Aberdeen was a large, prosperous, sophisticated centre in the middle of a surge of expansion and development.[24] Aberdeen consisted of two towns until they were united in 1891: Old Aberdeen in the north (clustered around the River Don) and Bon Accord (Clustered around the River Dee) in the south.[25]
Occupation: 'Wright' ('...maker, joiner or carpenter')[27][28][2]
20 May 1815: 'Matrimonially contracted' to to Elizabeth Davy [29]
10 Jun 1815: Married Elizabeth Davy (also spelled Davey and Davie in various documents) in Fordoun parish, Kincardinshire, Scotland.[29][30][31][32][33] [ Note: One 'Family Search' family tree has her as 'Isabella'.]
1819-1925: Residence: Chapel St Aberdeen, Scotland. At the time this was an area that contained a large number of timber yards, supporting the description of his occupation. He and his family attended the Gillcomston Chapel of Ease, although church documents were headed 'Old Machar' (Cathedral) [51][52][53][2]
20 May 1827: Birth of son David Croll in Balmakelly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland[54][55]
3 June 1827: Son David baptised at Marykirk, Kincardinshire, Scotland [56]
abt. 1830 There is a record of a Mr 'Croll, of St Cyrus' having executed the woodwork of the Fordoun Parish Church, which was completed in 1830. [58] The fact that sons Charles and David were both married in Edinburgh, and their marriage certificates show them as members of St Cuthbert's Parish Church congregation, suggests that they had moved to Edingurgh
1841: Residence: Balmakelly, Parish of Marykirk, aged 54, with wife Elizabeth (52), sons WIlliam (21), James (19) and David (14) and daughter Margaret (25), with family name spelled 'Croal' [2]Note: Arthur, Elizabeth and David are noted as being born 'In County'; William Margaret and James are not.
Research Notes
The family name seems to have been consistently spelled 'Croll' until some time in the early 1850s when it was also spelled 'Croall' (in son James Fullarton's death certificate) and 'Croal' (in 1841 census).Croll-284 05:39, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
Arthur was known to have travelled around, so his carrying out work at St Cyrus is plausible. St Cyrus is about 2 hours walk from Balmakelly[60]
Arthur, Elizabeth and David are noted as being born 'In County', that is, that they were born within the county in which they were resident[61]accessed 30 Aug 2021; William Margaret and James are not. Croll-284 05:39, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
Valuation roll information starts at 1855.
Research notes
Burgh records could be searched at the National Records of Scotland to see whether Arthur was a member of the Wrights and Coopers Burgh, which would give evidence for his status as a tradesman.
