This profile is part of the Cross Name Study.

Alford, the third son of Joel and Susannah Cross, was born on Thursday, January 15 or Monday, January 19, 1801 in Madison County, Kentucky. Alford married Mary Boyd in 1824 in Marion County, Tennessee. Out of this union came eight children all born in Marion or Hamilton County, Tennessee: Mary Elizabeth, Joel, Lucinda, William D., Zachariah Jackson, Martin Van Buren, James Alford, and Thomas Hart Benton. The Alford Cross family continued to live in Marion County, Tennessee in 1830.(Located in the southeastern part of the state that borders on both Georgia and Alabama.) However, by 1840 the Alford Cross family had moved one county over to the east into Hamilton County, Tennessee. By 1860 the Alford Cross family moved to a different state. They moved southwest to Dade County, Georgia. (It is located in the northwest corner of Georgia and it borders both Alabama and Tennessee.)

We get a brief personal description of Alford Cross from his grandson, Joseph Franklin (J.F.) Cross. "My grandfather was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and when he was older he wore a woolen shawl around his shoulders." He goes on to say, "Cross Hollow, Dade County, Georgia, was named for him. It is about 12 miles from Chattanooga, Tennessee and between Morganville and Wildwood, Georgia." Furthermore, J.F. Cross remembered as a boy it was his job to shell corn for the sheep every evening while he lived with his grandfather after his grandmother had died. There was this big outcropping of rock in the pen that he threw the corn on for the sheep, and near the big flat rock was a tree stump about three feet high. He would tease and aggravate the big ram and he would fight back. When the ram started for him, he’d jump behind the stump and wave his hat at the ram and then place it on top of the stump and the ram would nearly butt his brains out as hit the stump head on. Now his grandfather never saw him teasing the animals and one day while his grandfather was in the pen he bent over to pick up a sack of feed and he had his hat on when the old ram caught his eye and he charged him and butted his grandfather clear through the barn! He quotes Alford as saying, “Truth and honesty will carry a man to heaven.” He also describes the house that Alford lived in while in Georgia. “It had a porch across the front with a railing. There were two rooms on either side of a dog-trot hall. The kitchen was out the back. And there was an Indian mound on the place.” Alford died in 1882 in Dade County, Georgia and was buried at Cross/Townsend Cemetery, Dade County, Georgia.
