Biography

This profile is part of the Cross Name Study.

Elijah Cross, Orderly Sergeant in Shelby's Regiment, Revolutionary War, fought at King's Mountain. With Captain Daisy, they marched to the glade hollow near Clinch River and were stationed there as Rangers on the frontier. Served under Captain (later Colonel) Anderson of the blockhouse. They marched to Blackmore's Fort on the Clinch River. He volunteered under Captain Martin to go to the Cherokee Nation. In the fall of 1781, when Cornwallis was taken, he served as Orderly Sergeant for three months under Captain Wallace. They marched to Yellow Mountain to join Colonel Sevier. They marched to Ramsour's Mill in North Carolina. Elijah was a farmer in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He received several land grants. In 1794, he was a Chain Carrier for land surveys along the Holston River. District 8 - Blountsville Environs, Listed as owning 400 acres valued at $2,000. Shows Elijah Cross, Sr. as Head of Family in 1812. He was one of the settlers of the lost State of Franklin. Deed and Land Transactions Deed books 1 & 2, 1775-1795, page 720.
