The Cross (Crosse/Del Crosse) family immigrated to Maryland from England in 1663. They descend from Sir Robert Crosse (1552-1611), of a Charlynch and Spaxton family, who was knighted by his sovereign for his gallant exploits at sea. From the Hylle or Hull Cartulary, there were members of the Crosse family in Spaxton from the days of the Edwards. They held lands in Spaxton and Quantock-Durborough from the Fitchet family. Their family is traced back to Sir Gilbert De Lancaster Kendal (Lancaster Castle, England) and continues into a royal line of family in the year 950 in Aquitaine, France.
