Family legend is that Jay abandoned the family when my grandfather was 10 or 11. 1900 census records for Conneaut OH confirms this with Ella and my grandfather living with Henry and Arvilla Puffer and Jay living in a boarding house in Conneaut. Ella's census entry shows "married" and Jay's shows "divorced".

Dad had said they received a telegram that his grandfather died in Fargo ND. I recall dad saying 1939 but 1940 census has J. A. Crouch living in Fargo, born 1866 and links to referenced death certificate. Death certificate show being born in 1868, died in 1944.

1870 Springfield Twp. census record shows Jay being 4 years old. (transribed on Ancestery.com as "Day"

1880 Springfield Twp. census record shows name as "Croach" but other data matches.

1910 and 1919 City directories for Minneapolis show a Jay A Crouch. 1919 and 1928 City Directories show Jay Crouch in Sioux City Iowa. Also 1925 state census show him in Iowa.

Albert's obit in the Girard Cosmopolite Herald in 1927 lists Jay as being in North Dakota. Maybe a different Jay Crouch in Iowa.

1932 city directory has him listed in Fargo.

Jay is the man of mystery in my family
