Biography

Find A Grave bio:

"ELIZABETH HAYNES [sic Hanes] Was born in the township of West Flamborough in the year 1812. At the early age of twelve years she was converted to God, and at once connected herself with the great Methodist family. She was a daughter of Daniel Cummins, of precious memory, and was the youngest sister of the late venerable David Cummins, of Millgrove.

In 1835 she was married to Mr. Joseph Haynes [sic Hanes], who died a good many years before her. At the death of his [sic her] father she inherited his estate, and was converted to God, and lived and died, at the advanced age of seventy-seven years on the same farm on which she was born, and the old home is now owned and occupied by her only child, Mrs. Christina Poole.

Sister Haynes was well worthy of a place among the old landmarks and standbys of early Canadian Methodism. Her place in the Lord's house was seldom vacant. Her house was always a quiet and comfortable resting place for both the late and early preachers. Her means were always forthcoming to help on the work of God, and her whole Christian Life was an epistle of Christian rectitude, "known and read by all men." Her health for a lifetime had been good, and her last illness was short in its duration, both [death] came unexpectedly, but found her ready. In her case death had lost its sting.

On a fine September day, followed by her many friends, we laid her away among her numerous kindred who had gone before, in the Millgrove cemetery, to await the summons to the first resurrection. DAVID HUNT."

This obituary was written by Rev David Hunt (1831-1905) and published in The Christian Guardian Vol. 60 No. 80 p. 795 on 11 Dec 1889. It was transcribed by Raymond Cummins in 1993. This obituary is genealogically very important. It proves the relationship between David Cummins of Millgrove to his father, Daniel Cummins, of Rock Chapel.
