Biography

"Miss Cunningham" married Hugh Montgomery (need source for his name). Her name was thought to be Agnes since that name is carried among her descendants. The couple eventually came to live in the Waxhaw Settlement of South Carolina. They are the parents of Hugh "of Waxhaw" Montgomery who married Jane and died in 1783 and James who married Elizabeth McConnell in 1756 and Susannah Strange in 1778..

They had at least three sons:

Some researchers claim Mary, wife of James Adams who was born in Waxhaw in 1733- son David Adams (War 1812 fame in GA history)

Her husband is thought to have died in the Revolutionary War; a LW&T was probated after the war ended (1784 or 1786), but this is a confusion with her son Hugh "of Waxhaw" Montgomery 1727-1783.

Research Note

This post in 2013 at Genealogy.com has a different scenario for the family - [1]

"As many of you know Robert Montgomery and John Montgomery are both listed as soldiers in the Waxhaws Militia of 1755.

They are listed as Privates under the Militia leadership of Captain Andrew Pickins.

I am unable to prove at this time where these two men ended their days, but I do have a pretty good idea.

Now then, If this is to be proved then there must be more information brought forward.

One indicator is that of Robert Montgomery whom married Rebecca Coffee.

A deed dated 12 April 1825 shows Robert Montgomery of Munroe Co. Mississippi late of Lancaster District has sold unto Robert Kirk Sr. of Lancaster District for $310.00, 414 acres on both sides of Camp Creek. Said lands originally granted to my deceased father, and by him in his Last Will and Testament bequeathed to me.

Robert Montgomery

Witnesses: John Terry Isom Houze

Family tradition of Robert Montgomery who was married to Rebecca Coffee has him being the youngest of 8 sons.

If this tradition is correct then we should be able to find his brothers listed with him?

Knowing that Robert and Rebecca have sons born before the year of 1800 (Hugh and John) then we should look for Robert Montgomery as such in the 1800 U.S. Census reports.

See: 1800 U. S. Federal Census report of Lancaster District South Carolina. Three men in Lancaster Dist. are named Robert Montgomery.

1. Robert Montgomery- 0 males under 5, 1 male under 10, 1 male born before 1755.

2. Robert Montgomery-1 male under 5, 2 males 26-44.

3. Robert Montgomery-2 males under 5, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 5, 1 female 19-25.

The Robert Montgomery listed above is the same whom had Hugh Montgomery born between 1795 and 1799 that died in Mississippi. This Robert is also the father of the John C. Montgomery whom was born in 1798 in South Carolina and then lived his days in Monroe County, Mississippi.

This Robert Montgomery listed in the 1800 census and reported by me as #3 above is listed with Ninian Montgomery born before 1755, and Ninian Montgomery aged 26-44 years.

This Ninian Montgomery also known as Senior had known sons as Ninian Jr., Alexander. This Alexander Montgomery is whom died over the age of 100 years. He may have had a son named Robert D. Montgomery that was Witness to his Rev War Pension App?

In the 1810 U.S. Federal census report of Lancaster Dist. there appears those named Robert Montgomery.

Robert Montgomery listed in the 1800 census as #1 has either moved or has died? He was listed along with David Montgomery in 1800.

Robert Montgomery listed in the 1800 census as #2 has been identified as Robert D. Montgomery in the 1810 census. In 1800 he owned 10 servants. In 1810 he owned 25.

[[Robert Montgomery listed as #3 in the 1800 census is also located in the 1810 census report. In the 1810 U.S. Federal census report he is listed as |Robert Montgomery Jr." ---End of post at Genealogy.com dtd 2013.

There is much bad genealogy out there on this Montgomery family. Help with this and other Montgomery pages will be appreciated.'
